Capturing the essence of the subject. An artist has to expect entropy along the way.
Not driving a cab for a living any more, but the view from Mom's Taxi hasn't changed much.
Let's grab a coffee (or your beverage of choice) from the local quickie mart and go for a literary ride. My writing strives to capture the essence of the subject, and hits speed bumps. So, while no seat belt is required in the back of my taxi, you would be wise to buckle up.
As an artist, I never expected to be dragged into civic engagement. Yet here I am. On April 19th, 2022, I was invited to present my artwork, "Fostering Hope" to the Fountain Valley CA City Council. I spoke of capturing the essence of the subject, Stella The Baby Whale, as a volunteer collaborator with the Wyland Foundation and various water and ecology agencies in Orange County.
Since then, it is difficult to miss a meeting. Learning the extent and scope of decisions made by five people was startling. What was even more upsetting was the method of communicating with the city's residents. It is excruciatingly absent. Information which would have landed on doorsteps in the glory days of local newspapers has gone the way of the dodo, Thank you, Rupert Murdoch.
So some of our situations will find their way here, in my blog.
As a writer, I did what I could to increase people's information intake about local issues. Many people do not do Facebook, and that was my most convenient venue of choice. Social media is, to be charitable, a time eater. While engaged in that effort, my own agenda fell by the wayside.
I'm taking college classes this spring. My Facebook accounts, groups, pages, etc. are all deactivated for now. I may pop in occasionally to report what news I'm able to vet. Or I may not.
But I will be giving updates HERE for sure. I know that my city is not on everyone's radar, but the problems we face are shared by locations almost everywhere. And this is a better way to share information than the Billy Goats Gruff Bridge known as Facebook.
Thanks for encouraging this artist and writer to get back to her roots. Hugs all around!
Capturing the essence of the subject, and sharing it with the world.
